Un dia de primavera Jac Avila y Amy Hesketh decidieron hacer una película en Bolivia, evaluaron costos, actores, actrices, gaffers, maquillaje etc y se lanzaron a la piscina desde el trampolín mas alto y peligroso. porque hacer cine en Bolivia es eso, darse un chapuzón con el riesgo de romperse el cuello para luego dedicarse a jugar rummy.

Bien, con el paso de los días el proyecto tomó forma, era un feto que todos veían a traves de la ecografía y alababan a los creadores diciendo que este bebe tenía pinta de ser robusto y con exceso de peso, la facha se hacía mas hermosa con el paso de los días de rodaje y la aparición de un grupo de auspiciadores que creyeron en él.

Aparecieron novedosas locaciones paceñas y alteñas, actores con manerismos profesionales, tecnicos solícitos y la encantadora Veronique Paintoux se quitó la ropa mientras esbozaba su seductora sonrisa francesa.

La cinta vió luz en julio de 2010 ante la expectativa general de una población poco acostumbrada a películas eróticas bolivianas, de hecho esta entre las primeras de su historia, fue ahí que – como en todo nacimiento – aparecieron las visitas, o sea los criticos, algunos fueron benignos como padrinos que intentan darle un nombre al bebé y otros se encargaron de darle una paliza con trapo mojado solo por el placer de dejar su cuerpecito con ronchas de tinta china.

De pronto apareció el hada madrina, muy parecida a la del cuento de Cenicienta, solo que ésta no traía un gorro celeste con camisón incluído ni varita dorada sino que venía en forma de taquilla, una que duraría 25 semanas sin interrupción, convirtiendo a Sirwiñakuy en una de las películas mas exitosas de la historia de Bolivia.

Así, gracias a los miles de visitantes que llegaron en forma de publico, este bebé se convirtió tal como había mostrado la ecografía en un pequeño regordete y saludable que le dio una nueva dimensión al cine nacional y – porque no decirlo – tambien al mundial.

Ahora que se lanza la edicion internacional, podran ver de lo que es capaz un productor audaz (Avila ) y una directora talentosa (Hesketh) que juntos crearon un producto que a un año de su estreno en Bolivia se ha convertido en un referente interesante de adonde el cine erotico latino puede llegar.

Asi como El Ultimo Tango En Paris ocupa un sitial de honor en el erotismo frances, Emanuelle lo hace en el americano y Women In Love es para Inglaterra, ya no cabe duda que Sirwiñacuy es para Bolivia, cuyo cine erótico, muy escaso, ha visto un nuevo nacimiento que coloca a esta producción entre las grandes del genero en el mundo, y la prueba concluyente son los miles de espectadores que desfilaron ante las boleterias de la Cinemateca y otros cines durante una buena parte del año de su estreno.

“Warning: This is a brutal film that definitely will not appeal to everyone. It involves extensive female nudity and torture and falls into the “church torture of heretics” genre.

Now that you know what to expect in general:

The technical quality of the cinematography, and the authenticity of the sets and costumes gives this film a definite sense of “big budget theatrical release,” which is completely unexpected for a film in this genre, particularly one made on a stated budget of only $105,000.

Despite falling into the “torture” genre, the film does not rush into those scenes, but takes the time necessary to set up its story and characters, and does so with a calm that very much contrasts with later events. For a time, in fact, the head of the church, the women’s main accuser, truly appears interested in saving their souls, rather than in taking their money. donation, the background music remains soothing, rather than ominous, throughout the film, thereby contrasting what is happening in most of the scenes over which it is played. Even the opening questioning of the two women is understated, although Lady Mariana (Amy) gradually becomes more terrified as it becomes apparent that the charges against her are far more serious than her mere involvement in the minor altercation that had led to the appearance of the two ladies before the inquisitor tribunal.

The juxtaposition throughout the film of the scenes in which the head inquisitor calmly questions the many witnesses against the women with the scenes of Mariana and Francisca being brought to the dungeon, stripped, chained to the wall and subject to a variety of tortures was masterful, effectively presenting the unimaginable tension, terror and pain that lay just beneath the facade of a calm search for the truth.”

The Pachamama Films team is preparing a new production to be filmed in La Paz, Bolivia and its surroundings. It already has a title, not just a working title,  Dead But Dreaming.  The script is written by Jac Avila, the production is in the skillful hands of  Amy Hesketh, Jac Avila and Roberto Lopez L, all three worked together as producers in Sirwiñakuy and Maleficarum.

The film will be directed by Jac Avila and has as its protagonists three of the Pachamama Films divas, Veronica Paintoux, Amy Hesketh, and Mila Joya.

The subject is top secret, for now, but it can be said that a part of the story takes place in the  1800′s, during the times previous to the war for independence in South America.

Jac Avila directed the recently released feature Maleficarum, a film about the inquisition in Perú.  Another film directed by Avila, is the also recently released Martyr, filmed in New York.  Other films by Avila are El Hombre de la Luna, produced in Bolivia and Krik Krak, Tales of a Nightmare, filmed in Haití, Cuba and  the USA.

Amy Hesketh is the protagonist in Maleficarum, she also plays a main role in the film that she wrote and directed: Barbazul, her second film as director.  The first film directed by  Amy Hesketh is Sirwiñakuy, the most controversial Bolivian film until now.

Veronica Paintoux plays the lead role in Sirwiñakuy, she’s a protagonist in Barbazul and worked under the direction of de Jac Avila in Martyr.

Mila Joya had her beginnings in Maleficarum, she also has lead roles in the films directed by  Amy Hesketh: Barbazul and Le Marquis De La Croix , in the latter one she has the leading role along with Jac Avila.

Roberto Lopez has a long history of work with Jac Avila. He worked with Jac in many documentaries in the 90′s.  He was one of the producers in the docu/drama Outbreak: The Curse of the Black Typhus, he’s also a producer in Vientos Negros, Maleficarum, Barbazul and others.  He began his acting career in Sirwiñakuy and went on to play principal roles in Barbazul,  and Maleficarum.

 Dead But Dreaming is in pre-production,  principal photography will start on January 15th, 2012.

She’s taken out of a poultry yard where she was kept and she’s taken to a stake where moments later a sweaty executioner will light a fire in cold blood as if he was lighting a cigarette.  Moments later the witch burns, in reality what burns first is her hair, later the fire takes over the rest of her. This scene belongs to a movie about the inquisition the title of which I don’t even want to remember.

Now I will tell you about a moment in a novel about the inquisition, I don’t want to remember the title of this book either. This time the victim is a man who was a hero during the Spanish war against the moors.  His hero’s status is not respected, he is condemned to burn at the stake as a warlock, that’s it.  When the flames are covering his body, for a moment there he shows his hand, as if he is pleading for help, and in it there’s the mark of a cross branded  with a hot iron on the palm that held one of the swords that liberated Spain.

I considered all this as part of our culture or the pastime of someone who goes to the movies or reads a book until I came to live this experience in the real world all because of film director Jac Avila and his latest production, Maleficarum.

The victim in the movie is the talented Amy Hesketh who is taken to the pyre by a group of perverse men led by a priest that seems to have come from hell, of course, he’s the inquisitor who will spare no efforts to bring to this young woman and her friend all sorts of torments in the name of the Holy Church.

The pyre swallowed this actress in the midst of screams that brought me close to a nervous breakdown because I was living what I had seen in the movies or read in a book ages ago, however this time I could feel the fire almost licking my face while the hallucinatory expression of Hesketh told me that the movie did not exist and that we had traveled back in time for this encounter with pain.

After this incredible scene was over, in which the naked body of Amy contorted in pain in the center of the unbearable heat, after the screams stopped, and when we were eating our sandwiches, I could only look at her and tell her, “Bravo, bravo.”.

Now, by an act of Jac, I had left the dusty movie seat, I had left the thick book that I read during my sleepless nights, to enter into the reality of how a witch really burns. Of course, it’s only the shooting of a movie but so intense that for moments I was transported to the times of the nefarious inquisition and the only thing that kept me attached to the reality of the 21st century was the voice that said, “CUT… let’s do it again.”, in that beautiful valley on the outskirts of La Paz where the pyre was set up.

“A pretty powerful and disturbing movie: Disturbing because the film doesn’t really hold back in its many torture scenes, some of which are less than easy to stomach, but powerful because despite all the torture, the film manages to tell a rich story full of interesting characters, it manages to make the love between the two tortured girls who go through hell together rather than betraying one another feelable, and the direction (successfully) aims for atmosphere rather than sleaze.

The following are two segments of an in depth interview with Amy Hestketh, leading lady and producer of Maleficarum.  A third segment is coming up:

La sacan de un corral para puercos donde estaba encerrada y la llevan a la estaca donde instantes despues un verdugo sudoroso aplica la lumbre con la sangre fria que implica encender un cigarrillo, instantes después la bruja arde, en realidad lo primero que arden son sus cabellos, luego el fuego se encarga del resto. Esta situación corresponde a una escena de una pelicula sobre la inquisición de cuyo nombre no quiero ni acordarme.

Ahora paso a narrarles una situación que procede de una novela sobre la inquisición, no deseo ni siquiera acordarme del título de la obra en cuestión. Esta vez la víctima es un hombre que fue heroe español durante las guerras contra los turcos, pues bien no respetaron su condición de gran luchador patrio, fue condenado a la hoguera por brujo y listo… así, cuando las llamas cubrían su cuerpo, por un instante aparece su mano, como implorando ayuda, y ahi se distingue con claridad una cruz marcada a fuego en la palma de esa mano que un dia empuño una de las espadas libertadoras de España.

Todo esto lo he considerado como parte de la cultura o el pasatiempo de una persona común que va al cine o lee un libro, hasta que me toco vivir esta experiencia en la realidad y todo por culpa del director de cine Jac Avila y su última producción titulada Maleficarum.

La víctima en cuestión es la talentosa Amy Hesketh que es llevada a la hoguera por un grupo de perversos liderizados por un cura que parece salido del averno, claro es el inquisidor que no escatima esfuerzos para otorgar a esta joven y a su amiga toda clase de suplicios en nombre de la iglesia.

Resulta que la pira se traga a esta actriz en medio de gritos que me crisparon los nervios porque estaba viviendo nuevamente lo que había visto en el cine o habia leído años atrás, solo que esta vez sentía el fuego casi lamer mi rostro mientras el gesto alucinado de la Hesketh casi me indicaba que la pelicula no existia y que habiamos viajado por el tiempo para encontrarnos con el dolor.

Luego de terminada la increible escena, donde el cuerpo desnudo de Amy se retuerce en medio del calor insoportable, luego que cesaron los gritos y luego que repartieron los sandwiches solo atiné a mirarla y decirle: bravo… bravo.

Ahora y por obra y gracia de Jac, yo habia dejado la butaca de la sala de cine con olor a viejo, había dejado el grueso libro leído en noches de insomnio para adentrarme en la realidad de observar como arde una bruja, claro… se trata de un rodaje pero tan intenso que por momentos fuí transportado a los tiempos nefastos de la inquisición y lo único que me mantuvo pegado a la realidad del siglo 21 fue la voz de Jac que gritaba corte… repetimos…  en el hermoso vallecito en las afueras de la ciudad de La Paz donde la hoguera estaba preparada.

I must confess that I was on the set of the new Jac Avila’s film, Maleficarum, a story that take us to the times of the inquisition by the hand of a director who doesn’t hesitate to put to the test everything that surrounds him; like a doctor that, scalpel in hand, prepares to neatly dissect a body. It’s not clear to me if it is to cure or to cut, but whatever his intention is, he will do it with professionalism and in an almost aseptic way.

That’s where the two leading ladies, Amy Hesketh and Mila Joya, come in. Mila accepted to be in this movie, almost without really knowing what was waiting for her, while Amy, being a producer, knew exactly what was in store, more than that, had a hand in shaping what was to come. While one hardly knew how Avila was going to shape her acting to unsuspected levels (the other knew very well) achieving something that few directors do, make the pain of torture and the crudity of the scenes transcend the plot to install themselves in the set, where everything is silence but the feeling of surprise can be seen in the eyes of his collaborators, in the disguised expressions of the gaffers and the whispers of the cast that try to say: we’re accomplices of this wildness.

A series of torture instruments, appropriate to the time, along with an incredible location that transport us to a prison in the 17th century welcome us with the novelty that implies to be a movie set, everyone comments in an almost syrupy way, how nice or how well it is made, someone ventures to comment that it doesn’t look like it is made in Bolivia, they drink some coffee and talk about conjectural things, something like a new break… until Jac Avila arrives and then all changes in an incredible way.

In an instant the atmosphere fills with screams, lashes of the whip, the hissing of red hot irons and the well known purifying fire always present to purge those who dare sin against the church and its codes.

Avila, holding his scalpel or orchestral baton or his smile creates an ambiance that crosses the border between talent and plain daring, between art and evil, between fiction and history while Amy and Mila submerge in the sea of their despair, until, almost miraculously  the waited word arrives: CUT.

Days and weeks pass by and the story takes shape, although in a cruel way, two young women know love, two young women that walk through life innocently, naively, two young women that expect something good from the future until they have the misfortune of falling into the hand of the Holy Office, there everything will change and they will go from love to pain while the church prepares the trial and Jac prepares his baton, or scalpel or his smile while the rest of the witnesses on the set ask ourselves… how the hell did we get into this?

Debo confesar que estuve en el set de la nueva película de Jac Avila, Maleficarum, una propuesta que nos traslada a los tiempos de la inquisicion de la mano de un director que no vacila en poner a prueba todo lo que lo rodea, como un médico que bisturí en mano se prepara para realizar una prolija disección en un cuerpo. No tengo claro si para curarlo o para abrirlo pero sea cual fuere la intención, lo hará con gran profesionalismo y de manera casi aséptica.

Ahí es donde entran en juego las dos actrices principales Amy Hesketh y Mila Joya quienes aceptaron intervenir en esta cinta, casi sin saber lo que les esperaba y como Avila iba a moldear su actuación hasta límites insospechados, logrando algo que pocos directores hacen y eso es que el dolor de la tortura y la crudeza de las escenas trasciendan la trama y se instalen en el propio set, donde todo era silencio pero la sorpresa se podia observar en los ojos de los colaboradores, en los gestos disimulados de los gaffers y en los cuchicheos de los demás actores que intentaban decir: somos cómplices de la salvajada.

Una serie de instrumentos de tortura, propios de la época junto a una increible locación que nos transporta a una prisión del siglo 17 nos reciben con la novedad que implica estar en un set de cine, todos dicen casi de manera melosa, que bonito o que bien hecho, alguno se aventura a comentar que no parece hecho en Bolivia, toman un cafecito y hablan de cosas coyunturales, es casi como un descanso novedoso… hasta que llega Jac Avila y ahí todo cambia de manera increible.

En instantes, la atmosfera se llena de gritos, golpes de látigo, moldes al rojo vivo, jadeos y el consabido fuego purificador siempre presente para purgar a los que se han atrevido a pecar contra la iglesia y sus códigos.

Avila enarbolando su bisturí o su batuta o su sonrisa crea un ambiente que transita una linea fronteriza entre el talento y la osadía, entre el arte y la maldad, entre la ficción y la historia mientras Amy y Mila se sumergen en el mar de sus desdichas, hasta que casi de manera milagrosa llega la esperada palabra… corte.

Pasan los dias y las semanas y la historia toma forma, aunque de forma cruel, dos jóvenes que conocen el amor, dos jóvenes que transitan la vida de manera cándida e inocente, dos jóvenes que esperan algo bueno del futuro hasta que tienen la desdicha de caer en manos del Santo Oficio, ahí cambiará todo y pasarán del amor al dolor mientras la iglesia prepara el juicio y Jac prepara su batuta o su bisturí o su sonrisa mientras el resto de los testigos de set nos preguntamos… como diablos nos metimos en esto?
